The Twilight Zone S2E24
The Rip Van Winkle Caper
“Introducing, four experts in the questionable art of crime: Mr. Farwell, expert on noxious gases, former professor, with a doctorate in both chemistry and physics; Mr. Erbie, expert in mechanical engineering; Mr. Brooks, expert in the use of firearms and other weaponry; and Mr. De Cruz, expert in demolition and various forms of destruction. The time is now, and the place is a mountain cave in Death Valley, U.S.A. In just a moment, these four men will utilize the services of a truck placed in cosmoline, loaded with a hot heist cooled off by a century of sleep, and then take a drive into The Twilight Zone.”

Whilst I knew about famous episodes and moments through pop culture osmosis, I’d never actually seen The Twilight Zone TV series before (watched the movie when I was a kid, scared the shit outta me) so I recently decided to watch the TV show. I’m currently at the start of the 3rd season and (mostly) having a good time.
Top 10 favourite episodes so far (I’ve attempted to put in order):
1. The Invaders
2. The Hitch-hiker
3. The Howling Man
4. Elegy

6. I shot an Arrow into the Air
7. Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?
8. The Rip Van Winkle Caper

Six episodes I didn’t really care for (no particular order):
1. The Big Tall Wish
2. The Mighty Casey
3. The Night of the Meek
4. Mr Dingle, the strong
5. Static
6. The Mind and the Matter
my favorite twilight zone episodes if anyone who hasn't seen the show wants some reccs
Where is Everybody?
One for the Angels
Time Enough to Last
The Monsters are Due on Maple street
The Invaders
The Mind Over Matter

2.24 The Rip Van Winkle Caper
Director: Justus Addiss
Director of Photography: George T. Clemens
“The last of four Rip Van Winkles, who all died precisely the way they lived, chasing an idol across the sand to wind up bleached dry in the hot sun as so much desert flotsam, worthless as the gold bullion they built a shrine to.”

S02 E24 - The Rip Van Winkle Caper
Ok these guys are bank robbers. What about them? I don't remember this one.
Oh I remember visually, the cave and all that... but I don't remember what happens.
What?? They are gonna be in a state of suspended animation to wake up in the future? What the fuck! I don't remember it!
There is no way I'd sleep for 100 years and not wake up with a virtualy useless spine. I call bullshit.
Weird to think I live in a year that is closer to 2061 then to 1961. What a concept.
Os this just like I Shot an Arrow Into the Air? I think so, they are gonna kill each other over water and gold.
I know on surface level it is a criticism on greed. But to me it's more clearly about the ethics of powerful people seizing the resources to sell them to the population. Fucking wild.
Damn, I wish in the future we just gave up gold.

The Twilight Zone and its recycling mood
I like to think that they decided to re-use some of the stuff from “Forbidden planet” as a sort of tribute to that film, and not for budget-issue.
By the way, enjoy:

(2061 AD) In 1961, criminals pull off a daring caper by stealing a million dollars worth of gold headed to Fort Knox. Knowing they are going to be wanted men and the gold too hot to fence, they have themselves placed in suspended animation in a cave till the year 2061. One of the criminals dies before he is revived. The remaining criminals let greed get the best of them and in the end, all end up dead. The irony is that by the year 2061, gold is worthless. ("The Rip Van Winkle Caper" The Twilight Zone, TV)

Twilight Zone:  The Lonely -  CBS  -  November 13, 1959
Drama / Fantasy
Running Time:  30 minutes
Stars:
Jack Warden as James A. Corry
Jean Marsh as Alicia
John Dehner as Captain Allenby
Ted Knight as Adams
James Turley as Carstairs
Closing narration
On a microscopic piece of sand that floats through space is a fragment of a man's life. Left to rust is the place he lived in and the machines he used. Without use, they will disintegrate from the wind and the sand and the years that act upon them. All of Mr. Corry's machines, including the one made in his image, kept alive by love, but now obsolete—in The Twilight Zone.
Notes:
It was the first of several episodes (including "I Shot an Arrow into the Air", "A Hundred Yards Over the Rim" and "The Rip Van Winkle Caper") to be filmed on location in Death Valley.
The time frame of this episode occurs ca 2046.  The sociological implications are of a future governed by a society that has developed a rather severe method of penology, exiling their convicted criminals to places where there is no possibility of escape.  The episode explores the ability of a person to adapt to such circumstances aided by technology.
Ted Knight portrays a particularly disgruntled member of the space crew that brings supplies to the prison asteroid.

Twilight Zone Whump
Buckle in, I’m getting nostalgic about my whump. The plan for this is a series, something easy and low key for my first real writing project of the year: shorts based, however loosely, on episodes of the Twilight Zone.
Some background, in case anyone cares, but every New Years Eve, far back as I can recall, my family watched a marathon of Twilight Zone up to and past midnight. I think we watched the ball drop maybe... what, four times in all my years. So, this show’s got a special, nostalgic place in my heart.
Rod Sterling obviously knew the tragedy and horror lurking in mankind. So, there’s plenty right in your face, plenty of emotional anguish and physical stress, and all it’s truly missing is an in-depth exploration of the whumpy goodness that’s hinted at.
I’m no Rod Sterling, else I’d do them all that tickled my fancy, so I’m going to pick and choose. If anyone wants a specific episode, drop it in my inbox. This number, however, should set me up to write one per day.
1. Escape Clause
2. I Shot an Arrow Into the Air
3. The Fever
4. People Are Alike All Over
5. Prime Mover
6. A Hundred Yards Over the Rim
7. The Rip Van Winkle Caper
8. The Silence
9. Shadow Play
10. The Shelter
11. The Grave
12. Death’s Head Revisited
13. The Midnight Sun
14. I Sing the Body Electric
15. In Praise of Pip
16. Steel
17. The Living Doll

Conversation
every episode of the Twilight Zone season 2 summarized
King Nine Will Not Return: I could hardly focus on the plot because I was too busy trying to figure out whether or not the protag was a Nazi and therefore whether or not I should feel sorry for him (let’s just say there was some conflicting evidence)
The Man in the Bottle: a genie who grants FOUR wishes instead of just three?? now that’s a bargain!!
Nervous Man in a Four Dollar Room: lmao look at this fucking loser, can’t even work up the guts to kill a man. what a pussy.
A Thing About Machines: the most unlikable man in the world tries to “fix” his TV by throwing a chair through the screen (and then claims the repair man is trying to rip him off when he’s like “uhhh it’s broken because you fucking attacked it sir and that’s gonna be expensive to fix/replace”)
The Howling Man: they had me in the 2nd half not gonna lie
Eye of the Beholder: ugly people have no rights
Nick of Time: the meatball says no
The Lateness of the Hour: go to your room XJ-9
The Trouble with Templeton: imagine if you got the chance to go back in time and see your long-deceased wife and best friend but then both of them were like “fuck you go back to the present already”
A Most Unusual Camera: let the bodies hit the FLOOR
Night of the Meek: Santa Claus is a drunk and he said fuck capitalism (and the result is a surprisingly-heartwarming Christmas special)
Dust: lmao look at this fucking loser about to DIE better go insult him some more (also racism is real and it sucks)
Back There: I tried to go back in time to prevent Lincoln’s assassination but instead I made one of my friends rich via butterfly effect (oh and I accidentally stole John Wilkes Booth’s handkerchief and brought it back to the present with me)
The Whole Truth: ah, the old conman-gets-conned trick. classic.
The Invaders: fuck the US military. crush em like ants
Penny For Your Thoughts: a man gains mind-reading powers for only like a day which is good because I was afraid this story was headed in a “oh shit this is more of a curse than a blessing I don’t want to hear people’s thoughts all the time” direction. he had that power for just long enough that it was cool and useful and lost it before it became terrible (also I see that the title is trying to be punny because the protag gaining those powers was triggered by a coin landing on its side but that coin was clearly a QUARTER not a penny so nice try)
Twenty-Two: rip to the people who boarded that plane but I’m different
Odyssey of Flight 23: hello passengers this is your pilot speaking. I just wanted you to know that everything is fine and nothing weird is going on. we definitely did NOT travel back in time. please ignore the brontosaurus visible to your right.
Mr. Dingle, the Strong: talk about a stat buff
Static: FUCK this newfangled “television” thing I’m gonna go lock myself in my room and listen to radio stations that don’t exist anymore. at least nostalgic radio land doesn’t have commercials for GRASS CIGARETTES. I missed the good old days when kids played with SWITCHBLADES
The Prime Mover: oh hey my friend has telekinetic powers and I can exploit that to cheat at gambling!! the rest of the plot from here is very predictable
Long Distance Call: JESUS FUCK THAT’S DARK. I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY ACTUALLY WENT THERE. WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK
A Hundred Yards over the Rim: imagine if you were a pioneer on the oregon trail and you and your whole party is on the brink of death and then suddenly you come across a modern-day 7-Eleven
The Rip Van Winkle Caper: money isn’t real we made it up!!! if you’re stranded in the middle of the desert then a block of gold has no use to you except perhaps as a murder weapon!
The Silence: i will pay you to shut up
Shadow Play: the death penalty (10 hour loop)
The Mind and the Matter: i will now commit genocide using the power of my mind
Will the Real Martial Please Stand Up: what’s harder than trying to find a needle in a haystack? trying to find a martian in a diner (no really that is Rod Serling’s introduction to this episode almost word-for-word)
The Obsolete Man: UNF this episode was so good I can hardly bring myself to write a witty joke summary for it. uhhhh authoritarianism bad. genocide bad. human lives have intrinsic value. this episode was good.
